Previous Diagnosis CAPD

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a general term for disorders that affect how the brain processes auditory information. It is not a hearing impairment. Below is a summary of results from Lindamood-Bell Learning Center students who reported having a previous, third-party diagnosis of CAPD. These students received Seeing Stars® instruction for decoding and/or Visualizing and Verbalizing® instruction for comprehension.

Lindamood-Bell Learning Centers provide research-validated, one-to-one instruction to improve reading, comprehension, and math for students of all ages. In the summer of 2013, 60 students with previous third-party diagnoses of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) received an average of 114 hours of Lindamood-Bell instruction (primarily Seeing Stars instruction to develop symbol imagery for improved reading). Instruction was delivered by specially trained Lindamood-Bell staff. Student gains were measured with a battery of reading assessments.

After completing instruction, these students achieved the following average gains:

  • Symbol Imagery: from the 16th to the 47th Percentile. In terms of Standard Scores, this equates to a growth of 14.7 points. Note that, with Standard Scores, any change over 4.5 points is considered “large.”
  • Phonemic Awareness: from the 19th to the 39th Percentile. In terms of Standard Scores, this equates to a growth of 9.1 points. Note that, with Standard Scores, any change over 4.5 points is considered “large.”
  • Word Attack: from the 30th to the 58th Percentile. In terms of Standard Scores, this equates to a growth of 10.9 points. Note that, with Standard Scores, any change over 4.5 points is considered “large.”
  • Word Recognition: from the 16th to the 34th Percentile. In terms of Standard Scores, this equates to a growth of 9.0 points. Note that, with Standard Scores, any change over 4.5 points is considered “large.”
  • Comprehension: from the 21st to the 42nd Percentile. In terms of Standard Scores, this equates to a growth of 8.7 points. Note that, with Standard Scores, any change over 4.5 points is considered “large.”
