School Services Projects: Juvenile Justice

Project of HopeAfter 15 years on the bench, Judge James R. Milliken, the presiding judge of the San Diego Juvenile Court initiated a program to help reduce recidivism for juvenile offenders-- teach them to read.

Because of Judge Milliken's efforts, juvenile offenders housed at two San Diego juvenile camps have received intensive language and literacy instruction from Lindamood-Bell® staff. The incarcerated young men were placed in on-site Lindamood-Bell® Learning Centers for approximately eight weeks.

Independent evaluation of this study shows that subjects who received Lindamood-Bell® instruction outperformed statistically control subjects.

Judge and Juvenile Delinquent:
There is a strong link between learning disabilities and juvenile crime. It took the experience of one juvenile offender and a Juvenile Court Judge to set the stage for real change. The Lindamood-Bell® programs that changed the life of this young man also spurred the judge to create new programs to help many juvenile offenders with learning disabilities.
