Statistical Results By Prior Diagnosis - Hyperlexia

 

While often not professionally diagnosed with hyperlexia, a small number of students who received instruction exhibited some hyperlexic characteristics. According to the American Hyperlexia Association, hyperlexia is a syndrome observed in children who have a precocious ability to read words (far above what is expected at their chronological age) or an intense fascination with letters or numbers, significant difficulty in understanding verbal language, and abnormal social skills (difficulty in socializing and interacting appropriately with people). The following is based on students with above average decoding (at or above the 50th percentile)14 and poor listening comprehension (at or below the 25th percentile).15
