Lindamood-Bell Helps Transform Johnson City, TN Schools

In 2005 Johnson City Schools partnered with Lindamood-Bell to transform struggling schools and help meet the literacy needs of all students.  The district is comprised of 7,200 students enrolled in 11 schools. Forty-six percent (46%) of students are classified as economically disadvantaged.

With a focus on professional development, schools began seeing immediate progress.  One shining example is Mountain View Elementary School.  At this site, the leadership embraced the Lindamood-Bell® model and implemented the programs school- wide as a part of their RtI framework.  Results from 2008-09 show that students, including EL and SPED students, made dramatic and significant progress in reading and comprehension skills:
Since the partnership began, more than 200 teachers in the district have received professional development in the Lindamood-Bell® programs, which address phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Teachers receive embedded coaching and support from on site Lindamood-Bell® staff.  Key instructional leaders at each site also participate in a rigorous certification process, designed to build program capacity and sustain the model with quality and fidelity. 

This year, over 400 students in the district will receive targeted tier 3 intervention utilizing the Lindamood-Bell® programs. In addition, classrooms are providing instruction in the Seeing Stars® and Visualizing & Verbalizing® programs so all students are given the resources to read and comprehend on grade level. 

With this ongoing effort, Johnson City Schools continues to transform student achievement and help all students learn to their potential.
