Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1

Cortez, CO


Located in Southwest Colorado, Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 is a school district driven to help all students reach their learning potential.  The district is proud to serve a diverse population of students, including Native American students from the Ute Mountain Tribe to the southwest and the Navajo Nation to the west. 

 

Montezuma-Cortez’s partnership with Lindamood-Bell began in November of 2005.  Now in its fourth year, the partnership has expanded to all five elementary schools and Cortez Middle School.  During the 2008-09 school year, 270 students received targeted intervention to address reading and comprehension skills.  Hundreds more received direct Lindamood-Bell® instruction in their regular Tier 1 classroom instruction, with a focus on the early elementary grades.

Key highlights of the ongoing Lindamood-Bell® Partnership with Montezuma-Cortez include:


  1)  Seeing Stars® and Visualizing & Verbalizing® instruction in all three tiers of the district’s Response to Intervention (RtI) model

  2)  Seeing Stars® and Visualizing & Verbalizing® workshop attendance for all elementary instructional staff and on-going support by district staff certified by Lindamood-Bell

  3)  Lindamood-Bell® Consultant Certification program to ensure sustainability of the initiative

  4)  A positive learning environment designed to celebrate student success and problem-solve challenges

  5)  Consistent use of achievement data and progress monitoring tools to guide instruction decisions

 

 

For the 2009-10 school year, the Montezuma-Cortez school district has pursued comprehensive implementation of Lindamood-Bell® process-based reading instruction at all elementary schools and Cortez Middle School. The district expects that over 1,200 students will benefit from instruction during the course of the school year.
