Lindamood-Bell Helps Turn Around Low Performing School

CENTER, CO, November 2, 2011- Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes and Haskin Elementary, a high minority and high poverty school in the Center Consolidated School District, partnered in 2010-11 to implement the Center of Excellence Turnaround Initiative. Haskin Elementary was a School Improvement grant recipient of the Colorado Turnaround Initiative. Lindamood-Bell was chosen as one of its providers to address the school’s professional development needs in reading and comprehension.

After only the first year of the 3-year initiative, where 100% of the students in the school received Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars® and/or Visualizing and Verbalizing® instruction in either the classroom or small groups, teachers and students met or exceeded all of their performance goals. Third grade students improved from 28% to 41% proficient, compared to the prior year, on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP), the state achievement test. This is a 13% growth in the proficiency column. The number of students that performed at an unsatisfactory level was reduced by 8%.

More importantly, students are beginning to close the gap from unsatisfactory to proficient. A cohort growth analysis of 4th graders who received intensive Lindamood-Bell intervention showed their mean scale score growth improved from 456 in 2010 to 507 in 2011 on the CSAP. For 5th graders, they improved from 503 to 544.

Kathy Kulp, the principal at Haskin was an integral part of the transformation process throughout the building. “Lindamood-Bell has had an enormous impact on our school and on our students” she observed. “The training our teachers received impacted all areas of their instruction and led to increased student achievement across the content areas. Specifically, our students have improved their skills in decoding, fluency and comprehension, showing much higher than average growth. This is helping us close the achievement gap and move our students closer to grade level performance. The most wonderful result of all is the sense of achievement and confidence these children have experienced as a result of their hard work and that of their teachers. Lindamood-Bell has been an invaluable part of our transformation process and we look forward to even greater growth next year.”

The teachers at Haskin Elementary worked diligently towards improving their instructional skills in the Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing® programs, a major step towards sustainability. “A year ago we began the Turnaround process, unsure of how we were going to turn our school around,” said Melissa Garcia, the Instructional Leader certified by Lindamood-Bell. “I truly believe that choosing to implement Lindamood-Bell at Haskin Elementary was a great decision. Our students are being challenged more than ever before and our teachers have the tools, the metacognitive strategies, and support to reach them.”
