Certifies International Teachers for First Time |
|
San Pedro Sula,
Honduras, November 14, 2011- For the first time,
Lindamood-Bell has certified teachers as Instructional Leaders in a school
outside of the United States.
Recently, three teachers at Escuela Internacional Sampedrana (EIS) in
San Pedro Sula, Honduras, were recognized as Lindamood-Bell® Certified
Instructional Leaders. The
Lindamood-Bell® model enables teachers to address the underlying
skills necessary for students to read, spell and comprehend their
schoolwork. The certified
Instructional Leaders provide intensive remedial and developmental support in
small groups, as well as classroom instruction.
Lindamood-Bell first conducted on-site
workshops with EIS in 2005.Since
then, through on-site workshops and videoconferencing, over 50 teachers at EIS
have attended workshops and received on-site coaching and support. The mission of EIS is to prepare
bilingual students with academic/social/emotional skills and universal values
to succeed in the universities of their choice and to contribute positively to
society.
Melissa
Solorzano-Bustillo,EIS Special
Education Teacher and Literacy Coach says “It really has made a difference in
the way I teach. Now, I have
specific information about my students’ processing abilities and I can direct
my instruction to fulfill their academic potential. It is also easy to monitor their growth throughout the
school year.”
“It is sensational to
see our ‘catrachitos’ growing in their reading fluency and comprehension
skills. The programs empower
bilingual students to maximize their processing abilities in any language,”
adds Laura Martinez-Bonilla, also an EIS Special Education teacher and Literacy
Coach.
Denise Cerrato, one
of EIS’ Lindamood-Bell® certified staff, has noticed a difference in
the way the staff interacts with students. “The Lindamood-Bell® programs have given our
school a common language and common understanding of how the reading and
comprehension processes are taught,” says Cerrato. “Our school-wide model needed extensive support and
cooperation among team members and leadership; this cooperation resulted in the
effective implementation, as well as results, that have benefited individual
students as well as the whole school.”
Ron Vair,
Superintendent at EIS adds, “For the past 5 years, EIS has been associated with
the Lindamood-Bell® program. Three years ago, the school decided to embed Seeing Stars® and
Visualizing and Verbalizing® into the daily language instruction
periods in the school as well as the learning center. This decision has paid off in spades! Not only have the teachers been able to
reach the lower performing students, but the impact on student achievement can
be seen throughout the learning ability spectrum.”
