Schools Help Struggling Students to Read |
|
Caruthersville, MO,
November 15, 2011- Caruthersville Public
Schools and Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes have begun their second year
of partnership to improve literacy
skills for students. Caruthersville Elementary and Caruthersville Middle School
are implementing Lindamood-Bell’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) model
in the classroom and in intensive remediation groups, where teachers are
developing underlying skills necessary for students to read, spell, and
comprehend. A Lindamood-Bell®
Project Leader is directly supporting and coaching teachers in both schools.
Stephanie McGraw,
principal of Caruthersville Middle School, has noticed significant changes in student
performance. “We are very pleased with the Lindamood-Bell® program
and services,” she noted. “Our
students are gaining confidence in their reading/comprehension abilities and in
turn are becoming more confident individuals. They are volunteering to participate in class and are taking
an active part in their own learning. The Lindamood-Bell® teachers are creating their own lesson
plans and are becoming more self-sufficient in the pacing and acceleration of
their groups.I couldn’t be more
pleased,” says McGraw.
Last year, the
district initiated Lindamood-Bell’s unique, process-based programs. Over 160
students received intensive intervention in the programs. With extensive professional development
and support, students made tremendous gains in reading skills. They improved their reading accuracy
from the 5th to the 25th percentile, and their reading comprehension from the
8th to the 25th percentile. Historically,
these students made minimal progress from year to year, or regressed in their
reading skills.
