Co-founder of Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Author of “Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking®”

2011 International Conference Presentation Information:

Imagery:  A Sensory-Cognitive Foundation for the Component Parts of Reading

Imagery is a sensory-cognitive function underlying the component parts of reading—including reading comprehension and decoding.  Symbol imagery—the ability to create mental representations for sounds and letters within words—is foundational to both phonological and orthographic processing.  The sensory input of a phonological/orthographic image underlies the whole of the reading process.

~ Nanci's Background
Nanci’s background is in the field of reading, with extensive experience in the clinical treatment of language and literacy disorders.  After course work at Harvard University, she developed the concept that imagery is a critical factor in language comprehension and analytical thinking.  Primarily interested in solutions, she developed specific steps to stimulate concept imagery (Visualizing & Verbalizing® / Talkies®) and later applied that research to the development of her program to improve reading fluency and accuracy (Seeing Stars®).  This concept is now widely studied as a term by Dr. Alan Paivio as DCT (Dual Coding Theory).
