International Literacy Day
September 8th, 2011 |
|
On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.
International Literacy Day, celebrated every year on September 8, was first sponsored by UNESCO in 1965. Today, communities and countries throughout the world observe International Literacy Day.
Despite many and varied efforts, literacy remains an elusive target: some 793 million adults lack minimum literacy skills which means that about one in six adults is still not literate; 67.4 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.
Our goal in celebrating International Literacy Day is to promote the importance of literacy skills for all people, to deliver books to those who do not have access to them, and to share the magic of reading with our community.
