Talkies®

The Talkies® program aligns with a theory of cognition, Dual Coding Theory, and through sequential steps brings the nonverbal code of imagery to consciousness. The goal is to engage the individual to consciously create and access mental representations and stimulate his or her awareness of the imagery-language connection. Talkies® is not intended to diagnose or be an exclusive treatment for speech-language pathology and audiology disorders.

Talkies® is a primer to the Visualizing and Verbalizing® (V/V®) program, and the goal of Talkies® instruction is to develop mental imagery as a base for language comprehension and expression. Talkies® is especially helpful for students who need simple, smaller steps of instruction to establish the imagery-language connection. Talkies® instruction may benefit students with prior third-party diagnoses of expressive language delays or autism spectrum disorders.

Goals

The goals of Talkies®, primer to the Visualizing and Verbalizing® program, are to:
     ~Bring nonverbal imagery to consciousness
     ~Establish the imagery-language connection
     ~ Increase oral vocabulary
~ Improve language comprehension and expression

A. is 6 years old and has a diagnosis of development delay. Her mom said she is seeing so much change.  Not necessarily using full sentences at home, but her processing of language is what is changing.  She said that so much of what they have done in the past is multiple choice answers, and now she is realizing that A. wasn't even processing that.  One choice was pretty much the same as another.  Now A. is making choices, including refusals to do something.  For the first time, mom is having to use consequences which, even though it is tough sometimes, she knows this as a HUGE step forward.
-A story about a Talkies® Student from our Director of Instruction after a site visit.

Katie's first summer with us was a two-hour-per-day Talkies program, and she would consistently mix up size, shape, color, etc. and expressed herself by pointing or in one-word utterances.  One day, Katie was looking around the house, and her mother said, "Katie, what are you doing?"  Katie, said, "I lost a toy."  Janet said, "Can I help you look for it?" and Katie answered, "Yes.  It's this big, round, and gray."  All in one fell swoop, she got all the concepts right and expressed in a complete sentence!

At the end of her second summer of Talkies, Katie told us that she wanted to learn to read (they do no academics in her SDC and have their hands full just trying to keep the kids safe; in fact, Katie has been badly injured at school by a classmate).  We started her in Seeing Stars, and her reading jumped up nearly to grade level with just 2 hours/day for about 2 months.  Katie graduated to Visualizing and Verbalizing and On Cloud Nine this summer, and did really well in both programs.
